Ryuthu Lakshmi

In a small village surrounded by dry fields and uncertain rains, Lakshmi refused to give up the traditional seeds passed down through generations of her family. While many farmers shifted toward high-input commercial farming, she continued cultivating native millets and pulses using methods learned from her mother and grandmother.

The journey was not easy. Market prices were unstable, middlemen offered very little, and traditional crops were often ignored. But Lakshmi believed that the strength of the soil and the health of people were deeply connected.

Over the years, her fields became more resilient to drought, and her produce slowly began attracting conscious buyers looking for authentic and naturally grown foods. Today, Lakshmi is not only sustaining her family but also inspiring other women farmers in her region to preserve traditional agriculture.

Her story reminds us that protecting heritage crops is also protecting the future of food.
